The Balcolyn Boat Ramp at Shingle Splitters Point is a single-lane concrete boat ramp situated at the end of Queen Street in Balcolyn, along the peaceful western shore of Lake Macquarie.
The ramp provides direct access to the lake through a shallow but manageable channel, best suited for small to medium-sized vessels.
While the ramp's surface is generally in fair condition, occasional algae buildup and nearby docks can create minor slip hazards, particularly at low tide. Some users also complain about the bollard spacing, which is too narrow to turn to with a trailer.
The designated parking area is quite far from the ramp and can accommodate a limited number of boats and trailers and it may be filled up during the weekends and/or holidays.
The adjacent Shingle Splitters Point Reserve features open green spaces, shaded picnic tables, barbecue areas, public toilets, and a children’s playground.
Shingle Splitters Point is not only scenic but historically significant; it was named after early timber workers who split shingles from local casuarina trees. Today, the location offers excellent opportunities for boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, and quiet shoreline fishing. It is a great spot for leisurely afternoon with family and friends, with sheltered waters ideal for less experienced boaters.
