Tucked away in Jerona, the Barratta Creek Boat Ramp offers a practical two-lane concrete launch into the calm waters of Barratta Creek. A central pontoon makes tying up easy, though it’s worth noting the ramp becomes less usable at around a 0.5m tide, with trailer wheels potentially dropping off the edge. Access can be a bit of an adventure, with a heavily corrugated road leading in, and the creek itself is relatively narrow, so a little care goes a long way.
Timing your visit around the tides is essential. Nearby camping areas can be affected by tidal movement, particularly during higher tides, so it pays to plan ahead. That said, it’s a fantastic spot for fishing and a peaceful place to spend time on the water.
There is a wide flat unsealed area around the ramp which is great for parking cars and trailers. For those looking to stay overnight, a designated camping area sits about 2km from the ramp within Bowling Green Bay National Park. Facilities are basic, with limited camping permitted closer to the ramp and no powered sites available. Campfires are allowed under certain conditions, and the area caters to tent campers, camper trailers, and those who prefer to set up beside their vehicle.
Surrounded by mangroves and winding creeks, the setting is ideal for a relaxed outdoor escape. Cast a line, take a walk along the unsealed tracks, or bring along binoculars for a bit of birdwatching in this naturally rich environment.
A quick word of warning: midges are part of the experience here, so insect repellent is a must. Also, estuarine crocodiles are known to inhabit this part of the park, so always stay alert and practise safe behaviour around the water.
