The Big Tuan Boat Ramp, located in the coastal town of Tuan in Queensland’s Fraser Coast region, is a well-constructed, double-lane concrete ramp—considered by many to be the best in the area. It’s the only ramp within the Sandy Strait offering reliable 24-hour access, with launching possible at all but the lowest tides.
Access to the Sandy Strait from the ramp follows a winding, somewhat tricky channel that is partially marked. For first-time users, especially around mid-tide when sandbars may sit just below the surface, it’s worth having someone familiar with the route guide you through. The ramp also features a central pontoon used for boat retrieval, loading, and unloading, and it doubles as a handy platform for land-based fishing.
Big Tuan Creek is well-regarded for fishing, making this an excellent starting point for a day on the water.
The boat ramp includes a good-sized parking area for vehicles and trailers, and public toilets on-site are clean and well-maintained.
This is a peaceful, scenic spot; not just for launching boats, but also for relaxing by the water. The area offers expansive views and a quiet setting that makes it ideal for picnics, although it’s best to avoid visiting right after heavy rain, as mosquitoes can be quite active.
The surrounding area is rich in wildlife, with frequent sightings of kangaroos and pelicans adding to the natural charm. Whether you're heading out to fish, explore the Sandy Strait, or simply enjoy the peaceful surroundings, the Big Tuan Boat Ramp is a well-equipped and pleasant place to spend time.
