The Billie’s Bay Boat Ramp at Lake Wivenhoe offers a well-built, two-lane concrete ramp with easy access to the water, ideal for small boats, kayaks, and paddleboards. Surrounded by stunning natural scenery, it’s a peaceful spot with great facilities and plenty of room to enjoy the outdoors.
Do be cautious, though; the lower end of the ramp can build up with gravel and sand, which may make retrieving your boat tricky, especially if you're not in a 4WD. Carrying a shovel or traction boards is a good idea just in case.
The ramp area features clean amenities, plenty of parking, and a toilet block. It’s a great location for a quiet picnic, with a few tables and free gas BBQs available for public use. While swimming is not permitted, and boating is limited to 6 knots with no wash, the calm waters still make it perfect for a relaxing paddle or a bit of fishing.
Note that the ramp may be closed during periods of low water levels, so it’s worth checking conditions before you go. Camping isn’t allowed at Billie’s Bay, but it remains a popular day-use spot for its access to Lake Wivenhoe and tranquil atmosphere.
Lake Wivenhoe itself is South East Queensland’s largest water reservoir and the main water source for Brisbane and Ipswich. Despite its popularity, the lake is expansive, so it’s not hard to find a quiet bay to yourself, especially on weekdays. The area is rich in native wildlife, and it’s not uncommon to spot koalas and kangaroos among the trees that border the mostly rural and forested shoreline.
