Tucked away in Giru, a quiet rural town in the Shire of Burdekin near Cromarty, the Cromarty Creek Boat Ramp offers a simple and practical access point to the winding Haughton River, well known for its barramundi, along with catches of whiting, flathead, grunter, mangrove jack, and bream.
The ramp itself is a single-lane concrete structure that’s generally clean and easy to use, making it suitable for launching small to medium boats. However, conditions can become slippery and muddy during the wet season, so a bit of extra care is needed. Access to the ramp is via a dirt road, which may vary in condition depending on the weather.
There’s a spacious, unsealed dirt car park on-site, primarily used for boat trailers but also popular with visitors as a casual camping area. Travellers with campervans, RVs, and caravans often make use of the space, with free camping permitted for up to four days. Basic amenities include a long-drop toilet block, though it’s worth noting the campground is unpowered.
If you’re planning to stay overnight, it’s best to set up closer to the toilet facilities, as high tides can push water partway into the car park.
The area is also a good spot for land-based fishing, although some sections of the riverbank are showing signs of erosion, a concern that could benefit from future mitigation efforts. Overall, it’s a wide, open space with plenty of room to camp, and a reliable fishing location, whether you’re on the water or casting from the shore.
