The Derby Barge Boat
Ramp is a fantastic spot to experience the region’s massive tides and catch a
glimpse of fish swimming in the shallows. This four-lane concrete ramp,
complete with a central jetty, offers direct access to the ocean. However, the
strong currents can make launching a bit tricky, especially for larger trailer
boats. If you're heading out for a big crossing, the best time to launch is
during the top half of an outgoing tide, preferably on the lower end of the
tidal range. A pro tip: wait until the water reaches the pillar next to the car
before launching as there's a significant drop-off at the end of the ramp!
There’s plenty of
parking space for cars and trailers, making it convenient for visitors. The
area also features sheltered benches, picnic tables, and lighting in the car
park. Toilets are nearby, ensuring a comfortable experience for boaters.
Just a few meters from
the ramp, you'll find a large jetty; one of Derby’s favourite sunset-watching
spots. As the sky lights up in vibrant orange hues, visitors can relax and take
in the breathtaking views. Early risers will also appreciate the abundance of
birdlife in the nearby mangroves, while those visiting during tourist season
may even spot an ice cream van in the evenings.
One crucial thing to
remember: crocodiles are known to inhabit the area, so always stay croc-wise
when launching, fishing, or exploring the surroundings. Whether you’re here for
boating, sightseeing, or just soaking in the scenery, this ramp is a great place
to experience Derby’s natural beauty.
