The Dunalley Boat Ramp, located in the rural township of Dunalley within the Sorell and Tasman local government areas, provides deep-water launching directly into the Denison Canal. The ramp is positioned next to the main jetty and is suitable for all tides. However, it's worth noting the ramp can be slippery near the waterline and has a sharp drop-off at the end. Currents in the canal are strong, and the site is exposed to westerly weather, so caution is advised during those conditions.
Because the canal is tidal, timing your launch is important; ideally when the tide is turning. Once on the water, boaters have two primary options: head west under the swing bridge into Dunalley Bay for calm, sheltered waters, or continue through the Denison Canal out to the open sea.
Those considering the ocean route should be aware this passage includes some serious navigational risks. The canal’s exit is listed among Tasmania’s seven most hazardous waterways. If you’re unfamiliar with the area, seeking local advice or assistance is strongly recommended. Vessels with tall structures should also be mindful of the swing bridge. If your boat can't pass beneath, you’ll need to request the bridge operator to open it. Don't worry about any costs as there’s no fee involved.
Adjacent to the ramp is a popular seafood restaurant, a convenient spot to enjoy a casual lunch featuring local scallops and chips. Parking within the ramp is limited, so you may need to park on the side of the road or a short distance away.
Adding to the local charm is a well-known visitor called Neil, a juvenile Southern Elephant Seal who occasionally hauls out near the ramp. Neil gained some online fame and is a favourite with locals. He tends to appear a couple of times a year. If you’re lucky enough to spot him, please admire from a distance, 20 metres is recommended, as he's not particularly fond of large crowds.
