The Elizabeth River Boat Ramp on Channel Island Road in Archer, 5km from the Palmerston CBD is a favourite among boaters and anglers, thanks to its peaceful setting, easy access, and excellent facilities. The river itself is a prime fishing spot, where you can reel in the Threadfin Salmon, Golden Snapper, Mangrove Jacks and crabs, and the elusive Barramundi and even a few sharks, including bull sharks, tiger sharks, and hammerheads so there's always an exciting catch waiting!
This two-lane concrete ramp comes with a central pontoon to make launching smoother, and built-in lighting ensures visibility for those heading out for a night fishing session. Since the ramp is usable at all tide levels, boaters have no trouble launching anything from small tinnies to larger boats. Just be cautious; the surface can be a bit slippery, so take care when launching.
Parking is never a hassle, with a wide car park having space for more than 20 cars and trailers. Security cameras keep an eye on the lot, so you can feel safe using the ramp anytime. Amenities include toilets, a wash basin, a wheelchair-accessible ramp, and a fish cleaning station, making it a convenient stop for all visitors.
For those who don’t have a boat, the long jetty beside the ramp is a perfect place to take in the stunning sunset, enjoy the scenery, or drop a line into the water. Just a heads-up; midgies can be a nuisance, so bring some bug spray and wear protective clothing. And, as always in the NT, remember to stay croc-wise!
