The Emu Bay Boat Ramps, located along the Esplanade in South Burnie, feature two concrete ramps providing access to the Bass Strait. The offshore ramp is a dual-lane concrete ramp with an adjacent timber jetty and concrete walkway on the northern side. It’s exposed to north-westerly conditions and has limited access at low tide. The inshore ramp, also dual-lane with a timber walkway, is best used at high tide and is similarly exposed to north-westerly winds. A breakwater offers protection for both ramps.
Recent upgrades in October 2024 have significantly improved the site. A new stepped concrete pier has been added at the outer ramp, funded by Marine and Safety Tasmania (MAST), designed to enhance flexibility for launching, retrieving, and docking a wide range of boats. The existing outer timber jetty and lower jetty have also been upgraded, with new whalers, bracing systems, and pile repairs to extend their lifespan. Fenders on the lower FRP jetty have been raised for better visibility, and minor repairs were completed to improve usability for both boating and fishing.
Asphalt works around the ramps and jetty have also been done, making the area easier to access.
There is ample parking available near the ramp and in the designated parking area. Close to the parking area, you will find toilets with colourful and whimsical designs, as well as a BBQ station that includes a picnic table and benches nearby.
Emu Bay is a convenient and well-maintained spot for launching boats or enjoying a quiet day of fishing, with improvements ensuring it will serve the local boating community for years to come.
