Geilston Bay Boat Ramp

The Geilston Bay Boat Ramp, located in the suburb of Geilston Bay, offers a single-lane concrete ramp built on piles, with all-weather and all-tide accessibility. The ramp is well sheltered and includes a floating pontoon alongside, making launching and retrieval more convenient. However, the surface can become slippery at low tide, so care is advised.

The bay itself is lined with moorings and features a 5-knot speed limit until you pass the final moored vessel. While not as heavily used as other ramps in Hobart, Geilston Bay’s ramp has recently undergone upgrades and is now fully open, offering improved functionality and space for boats of various sizes. It’s often considered one of the better ramps in the Hobart area for ease of use.

Parking is limited but generally sufficient, with room for trailers and additional public parking nearby.

The area around the ramp is family-friendly, with a foreshore park, open fields, toilets, a small playground, sheltered picnic areas, and BBQ facilities, making it a pleasant spot for a casual outing. The ramp also connects to the Clarence Foreshore Trail, offering scenic walks in both directions along the river.

Anglers will appreciate the local fishing opportunities, particularly during summer, when the Derwent River produces good numbers of bream.

Adjacent to the ramp is the Geilston Bay Boat Club, a welcoming local venue known for its relaxed atmosphere and reasonably priced meals, making it a nice option for a post-trip meal or catch-up with fellow boaters.
