The Gordon Boat Ramp, located along the Esplanade in the quiet rural setting of Kingborough and Huon Valley near Hobart, is a dual-lane concrete ramp with a central walkway pontoon for easy launching and retrieval. There is also a small ramp beside the jetty, best suited for launching small watercraft.
The ramp is relatively new and well-constructed, making it simple to get your boat in and out of the water. While launching can be a bit limited at low tide and the site is exposed to northeasterly winds, a breakwater offers protection, and there's a blue navigation light at the end for added visibility in low light.
This ramp provides access to Lake Gordon and the Ragged Basin area, popular with anglers chasing both brown and rainbow trout, though browns tend to be more common. It’s a solid spot to throw in a line if you’ve got your fishing gear with you. On calm days, it's peaceful and productive, but expect a bit of a challenge if the wind picks up.
There’s a jetty right beside the ramp for land-based fishing, though for better results, it’s worth walking out onto the nearby rocks where the fish tend to bite more readily. Flathead and salmon are often caught here, especially away from the main traffic near the jetty.
A few metres away from the ramp is a well-kept caravan park, located near a beach area, which offers toilets, a sheltered BBQ station, tap water, a waste water dump, picnic table facilities, and a kids' playground, ideal for overnight family campers. Camping here is $5 per night.
It’s a pleasant, low-key location with decent facilities and a good reputation among locals. The nearby campsite adds to the appeal—whether you're launching a boat or just spending a quiet day fishing, Gordon offers a laid-back setting to enjoy the water.
