The Howden Boat Ramp is situated in the suburb of Howden, just south of Hobart, along the shoreline of North West Bay. This is a single-lane concrete ramp with marked channels for guidance, offering a shallow entry point. The area is known for its oyster beds, so caution is advised when walking outside the ramp area, especially at low tide.
Access to the ramp is via a narrow, winding road that runs through a quiet residential area. While the road is navigable, it’s more suitable for smaller vessels such as tinnies, rather than larger boats.
There is ample parking available, including designated spaces for vehicles with trailers.
The surrounding area offers much more than just boat launching. It's a pleasant location for a coastal walk, with picnic tables and benches available for visitors. The views over North West Bay are particularly scenic.
Howden is also known as an excellent viewing spot for the Aurora Australis on nights with strong solar activity. The location is safe and accessible after dark, with minimal light pollution, making it ideal for night photography. At low tide, striking rock formations are revealed, adding to the natural appeal of the area.
