Update as of 11/25/2025: In November 2025, Frankston City Council secured $110,000 to undertake maintenance dredging at the Kanakook Creek Boat ramp. This is a high-use facility, particularly busy during snapper season from October to December, and ongoing dredging is essential for keeping the area safe and easy to navigate. Through a Recreational Boating Grant, the council will continue dredging both the ramp area and the mouth of the access channel leading into Port Phillip. These works help maintain a target depth of around 1.6 metres and also support beach re-nourishment efforts along nearby Frankston Beach. Long-reach excavators are used to remove accumulated sediment along roughly 100 metres of waterway. The project is funded through boating and registration fees and forms part of a statewide program aimed at improving access for recreational boaters.

The Kananook Creek Boat Ramp, situated along the Frankston Foreshore between the Promenade and Nepean Highway, offers an eight-lane concrete ramp and a generously sized car park. It provides direct access to Kananook Creek, which flows out to Port Phillip Bay.

The location itself is convenient, with easy parking (the car park has a huge space with dedicated car and trailer parking spots) and practical facilities. A fish-cleaning table sits beside the ramp for those returning with a catch, and fishing-boat hire options are available nearby for visitors without their own vessel. A toilet block is located next to the car park.

The ramp is close to the Foreshore Reserve, where you’ll find additional amenities including toilets, water fountains, a playground, and picnic areas. The Frankston Pier, bus terminal, landmark pedestrian bridge, and the popular Big Crab sculpture are also within walking distance.

Frankston Pier is an appealing spot for a relaxed stroll, fishing, or simply soaking up the coastal atmosphere. The boardwalks and walking tracks are tidy, modern, and well-maintained, with great views across the bay. On weekdays, you’ll often see families, kids, couples, and anglers enjoying the area. Dining options such as a free BBQ area, restaurants and an ice-cream bar sit near the foreshore, making it easy to enjoy a meal, watch the sunset, or take in the sea breeze.

The beach itself is clean and family-friendly. Shallow sandbars create safe paddling areas for young children, and open beach showers are available for rinsing off. While the pier is pleasant during the day, it’s worth noting that it becomes very dark at night due to the lack of lighting. Overall, the foreshore offers a peaceful spot for fishing, photography, or a quiet walk by the water.
