Tucked away about 50km
past Borroloola on the McArthur River, the King Ash Bay Boat Ramp is a popular
launching spot for anglers looking to explore some of the best fishing waters
in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The two-lane concrete ramp is now covered in dirt,
and the water levels can be shallow at times, so be sure to check the tides
before heading out.
What makes this spot a
great place to launch is the natural protection from the mangrove-lined rivers
and creeks, keeping the waters calm and sheltered. From here, you get direct
access to the McArthur River, which leads out to the Sir Edward Pellew Islands
and the surrounding waters of the Gulf. And if you’re into fishing, you’re in
for a treat; the waters are a hot spot for a wide variety of fish, with
Barramundi being the prized catch.
Parking isn’t an
issue, as there’s a spacious dirt lot nearby for cars and trailers. Right near
the ramp, you’ll find the King Ash Bay Boat and Fishing Club, a go-to spot for
visiting anglers. The club hosts well-known fishing competitions that draw in anglers
from all over Australia, making it a lively hub for fishing enthusiasts.
Beyond fishing, the
area has plenty to offer. There’s a service station, a mini-mart, houseboats,
accommodation, and even fishing tours available. When you’re done on the water,
you can swing by the Groper Bar at the clubhouse, which is open nightly and serves
up tasty counter meals.
With fantastic fishing
year-round and a welcoming fishing community, King Ash Bay is a must-visit
destination for any boating or fishing enthusiast.
