Kingston Beach, a suburb just south of Hobart, sits along the Derwent River where it meets Browns Rivulet. At the southern end of the beach, near the Kingston Beach Sailing Club, there’s a single-lane concrete boat ramp with a walkway alongside it. A seawall helps protect the ramp, though it’s still exposed to weather from the northeast through to the southeast. It’s usable at all tides, but not without its challenges.
This ramp isn’t ideal if you’re launching solo; the surge can be tough to manage, and the surface is known to be quite slippery. Rear-wheel drive vehicles in particular may struggle here; there’s been more than one story of cars sliding in. It’s best used with two people.
Parking at the ramp itself is limited, and some choose to park trailers across the road. If that’s full, there’s more parking available at the northern end of Kingston Beach.
While there are no facilities right at the ramp, the beach is well-equipped overall. Public toilets can be found across the road in the middle section of the beach, and there are showers next to the southern playground. Drinking water is available from taps along the pathway. The northern end of the beach also has wheelchair access.
The beach itself is generally calm, with gentle waves and safe swimming conditions. Just be mindful around the southern corner, as this is where boating activity is concentrated, and the water can drop off quickly.
As for fishing, the area is well-regarded. Plenty of flathead, trevally, whiting, calamari, and rock cod are commonly caught here, many of decent size. It's a solid choice if you’re looking for a reliable spot to cast a line. Occasionally, dolphins visit, and very rarely, a whale appears. Fur seals can also be spotted from time to time.
Overall, the Kingston Beach boat ramp provides easy access to the Derwent and is a good launching point for most boaters.
