The Lake Colac Boat Ramp provides direct access to Lake
Colac, Victoria’s largest natural freshwater lake, located within the Colac
Otway Shire. Positioned near the township of Colac, the ramp is highly
accessible and convenient for local boaters. The dual-lane concrete ramp is in
good condition, but due to the lake’s seasonal water level fluctuations, its
usability can be impacted, particularly in drought conditions. The lake is
relatively shallow, which makes it only suitable for small to medium-sized boats.
No floating pontoons are available, so launching and
retrieval may require additional effort, but there is a jetty on the Eastern
side of the ramp for boat loading and unloading, and land-based fishing.
Anglers frequent this ramp due to the redfin and European
carp populations, with some reports of trout and eels in deeper sections of the
lake.
The lake is also popular for kayaking, canoeing, and
windsurfing, as its open water and consistent breezes create ideal conditions
for these activities.
The surrounding area is well-developed, with toilets, picnic
shelters, a kids' playground, a coffee
van shop, and BBQ areas in the adjacent grassy park; making it an excellent
spot for day trips and family outings. A dedicated running track is beside the
lake, allowing visitors to take in scenic views and local wildlife while
keeping themselves physically fit. The ramp itself is accompanied by a small
car park, though parking can become limited during peak seasons.
Colac serves as a gateway to the Otways, and many visitors
combine a trip to Lake Colac with hiking and nature exploration in nearby
parks. While the lake is not known for large-scale boating, it remains an
important and accessible waterway for locals and visitors passing through the
region. Given its proximity to town, it’s one of the more conveniently located
ramps for those looking to enjoy freshwater boating without venturing too far
from urban amenities.
