The Lake Dartmouth Boat Ramp provides access to Victoria’s
most extensive capacity water storage impounded by Dartmouth Dam, situated in
the Alpine region of northeast Victoria. Known for its deep, clear waters, the
lake is highly regarded among anglers for its populations of Macquarie perch,
brown trout, and rainbow trout.
The boat ramp is a dual-lane concrete structure,
well-maintained and accessible under most conditions. There is also a pontoon
nearby, useful for loading and unloading and docking boats. Small motorised
crafts, personal watercraft, and kayaks can be launched into the ramp. Given
the lake’s high water volume and fluctuating levels, the ramp remains
operational even in drier months when other regional lakes may experience low
water. Dartmouth is an enclosed water body, offering calm conditions suitable
for both fishing boats and recreational watercraft. Given its mountainous
surroundings, the area can experience sudden weather changes, so boaters are
advised to check conditions before launching.
Finding a parking space for cars and trailers is no problem
as there are plenty of available ground where boaters can find a spot to park.
The area surrounding the ramp offers useful facilities, such as picnic areas
with BBQ stations and toilets located within the grassy and shaded areas of the
ramp.
Boaters should be prepared for self-sufficient launching, as
assistance services are not readily available in this remote location. While
the lake is a prime spot for camping and multi-day fishing trips, there are no
available camping grounds within the ramp.
Due to its location within Alpine National Park, Dartmouth
Lake offers a serene and pristine environment, attracting not just boaters but
also hikers and nature lovers. The lake’s sheer size and depth allow for
trolling, bait fishing, and fly fishing, making it a premier destination for
serious anglers.
