The Leeuwin Boat Ramp
in East Fremantle is one of the most popular launch spots in the area, offering
direct access to the Swan River and the open ocean. This well-maintained,
three-lane concrete ramp is flanked by two jetties, making it easier to dock boats.
Plus, it’s right next to a sandy beach, adding to the scenic charm.
That said, boaters
should be cautious! While the ramp itself is in great condition, strong
currents from the harbour end can rush through from the south side, creating a
real challenge—especially for those who aren’t expecting it. Even on calm,
windless days, these currents can make launching and retrieving your boat
tricky, and if you’re not careful, you could end up damaging your own or
someone else’s vessel. Additionally, be mindful of wash from passing boats,
which can add to the difficulty.
The adjacent car park
is spacious, with room for over 30 cars and trailers, plus a separate parking
area for regular vehicles. However, it fills up fast, especially during peak
times. The area is well-lit at night, making it safer for evening outings. The
biggest downside? The parking fees. As of 2024, it costs $4.50 per hour or $20
for a full day, which many boaters find steep; especially considering there’s
no proper boat wash-down facility included.
Despite these
drawbacks, the Leeuwin Boat Ramp is in a great location with a café, children’s
park, and toilets nearby, making it a pleasant spot to spend some time before
or after hitting the water. Whether you're launching for a day of fishing,
cruising, or just enjoying the Swan River, it’s a solid option; just be
prepared for those tricky currents and the pricey parking!
