The Malabar Boat Ramp is a single-lane public facility designed for small to medium-sized vessels, located at the northern end of Long Bay in Malabar. It was recently upgraded in 2024 through a partnership between Randwick City Council and the NSW Government. While it is primarily utilised by the Malabar Boat Owners & Sea Rescue Club, the ramp is open to the public and provides improved access to offshore fishing grounds, diving spots, and rescue operations. The ramp serves as a gateway to the Tasman Sea, making it a convenient launching point for ocean-going vessels.
The area around the ramp is scenic, offering good views at the launching site; however, boaters should exercise caution due to a steep drop-off at the end of the ramp, which can make launching difficult during low tide. Parking is limited and can become congested on weekends.
Surrounded by rugged coastal headlands, calm bay waters, and nearby walking trails leading into Malabar Headland National Park, the ramp area is appealing for visitors. Although the facilities are basic, council and community discussions have proposed additional upgrades, including lighting, picnic areas, and water safety measures. The ramp is frequently used by divers for training and certification, and the clear waters are popular for snorkelling and paddleboarding. Visitors particularly enjoy the beautiful natural setting, especially during quiet afternoon hours or as a scenic lookout to watch the waves.
The deeper waters in the area provide an ideal spot for experienced skippers heading out for reef fishing. Dog owners are reminded to adhere to local leash laws, as off-leash pets around the ramp and beach have raised community concerns. With ongoing improvements, Malabar remains a valuable access point in Sydney’s southern waterways.
