meunga creek boat ramp

Located at the northern end of Cardwell in Ellerbeck, the Meunga Creek Boat Ramp sits at the end of Coral Sea Drive, close to a local boatyard and offering direct access into Meunga Creek, Little Bay, and out to the open ocean. The facility features a single-lane concrete ramp that’s popular with locals and visitors heading out for fishing and exploring the nearby coastline.

Access to the ramp is via dirt roads, and during wet weather, the area can become quite muddy, including the ramp itself, which may turn slippery underfoot and for vehicles.

Boaters should also keep in mind that the creek mouth can become shallow and restricted at low tide, which may make access more difficult depending on water levels and conditions. A 4WD is recommended for this area, particularly after rain or during softer ground conditions.

There is space available to park vehicles and trailers around the boat ramp area, making it a convenient spot for a day on the water.

The creek is a scenic and peaceful spot, but crocodiles are known to inhabit the area, with large crocs regularly sighted nearby. Visitors are strongly encouraged to remain croc-aware at all times, particularly around the water’s edge and camping areas.

South of the Tully River lies a largely untouched 25-kilometre stretch of beaches and tidal creeks, much of which forms part of the Edmund Kennedy National Park. The region remains relatively undeveloped thanks to its low-lying sandy terrain and wet conditions, preserving its natural beauty and remote atmosphere. Meunga Creek serves as one of the few access points into this coastal wilderness, with a camping area and boat ramp located near the southern end of the park.

The nearby coastline features wide tidal flats, sandy shoals, and long open beaches that are best enjoyed around mid to high tide. Swimming is safest away from creek mouths and strong tidal currents, while surfers will generally find small waves at high tide and exposed sand flats at low tide. Fishing and boating are the main drawcards here, with the creek and inlet providing good opportunities to explore the surrounding waterways.

Overall, Meunga Creek offers a rugged and natural boating destination with excellent access to fishing grounds and coastal scenery, best suited to those prepared for changing tides, muddy conditions, and the realities of Far North Queensland’s wild environment.
