The new boat ramp at Midge Point, accessible via Jimmys Rock Road, features a modern two-lane concrete ramp providing direct access out to the ocean. Set against a scenic coastal backdrop, it’s quickly become a standout launching spot for locals and visiting boaters alike.
The project included the design and construction of both the boat ramp and causeway north of Mackay, within tidal land and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Careful planning was required to minimise impacts on marine vegetation and fish passage, while also reducing the footprint of works in this exposed coastal environment.
Boaters should be aware that the ramp is tide-dependent and can be affected by cross currents and wave action. There are currently no on-site amenities, and some users have noted the lack of a nearby tie-up area for boats, with parking located more than 200 metres from the ramp.
If you’re heading out here, it’s worth bringing insect repellent and keeping an eye out for local wildlife.
For those living nearby, it’s a fantastic facility to have on the doorstep, while visitors are often pleasantly surprised by the quality and location of the ramp. The surrounding area also offers beautiful sunrise views, making it a great spot to explore or even capture with a drone.
Overall, Midge Point offers a unique and impressive coastal launch point with easy access to the water and a laid-back atmosphere.
