The Murray Creek Boat Ramp at Mount Pelion, accessed via Landing Road, features a single-lane concrete ramp providing access to the productive waters of Murray Creek.
The ramp is generally regarded as reliable and easy to use, even at low tide, with enough water depth for most smaller vessels to launch and retrieve comfortably. The surrounding car park is well set up, offering a large parking area with ample room for cars and trailers, and security cameras have recently been installed for added peace of mind.
While the ramp suits tinnies and smaller boats particularly well, larger vessels can face challenges during low tide due to the creek’s highly tidal nature. Sandbars and mudbanks can block sections of the creek, so local knowledge is a real advantage for anyone unfamiliar with the area. Like many ramps in the region, conditions can change significantly with the tides, and boaters should take extra care navigating the creek, especially around shallow sections and submerged snags.
There’s no pontoon at the ramp, but parking is usually sufficient outside of busy periods such as school holidays.
Fishing and crabbing are major drawcards here, with Murray Creek known for healthy populations of barramundi, mangrove jack, and mud crabs. During higher tides, larger boats can also head offshore for the chance to target species such as giant trevally, coral trout, and the occasional red emperor.
The area itself is peaceful and scenic, making it a popular spot for a relaxed day on the water. Just remember to pack insect repellent, as mosquitoes and sandflies can be active, particularly around dawn and dusk.
One important reminder for visitors: crocodile warning signs around the ramp should be taken seriously, with large crocodiles regularly sighted in and around the creek system.
