The Old Beach Boat Ramp, located in the rural suburb of Old Beach within the Brighton area of Hobart, is a small single-lane concrete ramp accompanied by a small wooden jetty. It’s a suitable location for launching smaller boats or personal watercraft into the Derwent Estuary.
However, boaters should be aware of the strong current in the area, which can make launching and retrieving particularly challenging. Low tide conditions can also make retrieval and launching tricky as well. Lighting is also limited, so launching after dark is not recommended.
Parking is fairly limited, with minimal space for turning around. On busy days, some vehicles may resort to parking along the roadway.
Fishers can catch flathead, bream, or shellfish in the River Derwent, but Public and Environmental Health advises against consuming bream and any shellfish caught in these waters.
The surrounding area offers more than just boat access. There’s a pleasant walking track that’s ideal for pets, and the location provides peaceful, scenic views, including a lovely outlook toward Mount Wellington.
Ducks frequent the area, much to the delight of visitors, especially children, and there are a few convenient amenities such as a rubbish bin and a nearby bench along the track, perfect for watching the sunset or enjoying a quiet break. Keep in mind that diving and swimming in the river are prohibited.
Whether you're heading out for a casual fishing trip, launching a small craft, or simply enjoying some time by the water with family or friends, the Old Beach Boat Ramp offers a peaceful and scenic setting.
