The Paynesville Boat Ramp, also known as the King Street Boat Ramp, is positioned along Slip Road, and offers two ramps with a gentle gradient, along with a jetty and a small beach area. It’s an easy spot to launch into McMillan Strait, part of Gippsland Lakes, sitting conveniently across the road from marine repair shops and a boat storage.
This ramp is well-suited for larger boats, especially on windy days, thanks to its sheltered location and good entry and exit angles, though it’s worth noting that algae can make the ramp surface quite slippery at times.
There’s plenty of room to manoeuvre, deep water that simplifies launching and retrieval, ample parking for both cars and trailers, and a mooring space.
Facilities are generally good; you can find public toilets. Beyond boating, the area itself is peaceful and inviting, great for a picnic, a swim, or simply relaxing by the water.
Many visitors appreciate the calm atmosphere, abundant birdlife, and beautiful sunsets. Black swans, pelicans, cockatoos, ibis, and colourful parrots are commonly seen. Fishing is also rewarding, with trevally, bream, whiting, and the occasional toadfish caught in the area.
The surrounding town is quiet and family-friendly, making it a pleasant drive from Melbourne. The ramp is usually easy to access outside of peak periods, but expect delays during the busy summer holidays. Overall, it’s a reliable and well-liked spot for launching a boat.
