Located in Attadale, the Point Walter Boat Ramp in Point Walter Reserve, provides convenient access to the Swan River and surrounding areas. It’s a popular launch point for those looking to explore the calm river waters, with twin ramps and a narrow jetty between them that makes boat handling straightforward.
Launching and retrieving boats, especially those over 6 metres, is typically smooth, thanks to thoughtful design features like rubber protection on the pontoon posts.
There is a word of caution, though: the submerged parts of the ramp are covered in barnacles, so it’s best to avoid jumping off the boat barefoot. Wearing protective footwear is strongly recommended to avoid injury.
The area is also ideal for kayaking and paddleboarding, with generally flat, shallow water that’s well-suited for family outings. It’s a safe spot for children to splash about, and the water is usually clean. On hot days, the cooler evening hours can be a particularly pleasant time to visit.
The car park is spacious and features a large number of trailer parking spaces, along with clearly defined areas for queuing and post-launch activities. However, it is a popular location, particularly during the summer months, so arriving early is advisable, as the area can fill up quickly. There is additional overflow parking available along the access road; however, all parking is paid and regularly monitored by rangers.
Beyond boating, Point Walter is a scenic and family-friendly riverfront destination. There are public toilets, shaded picnic areas, a cafe and kiosk, playgrounds, refurbished tennis courts, and barbecues. Open grassy areas and natural shade make it an inviting place to relax. Walking and cycling paths are plentiful, and birdwatching is another common activity in the area.
One standout feature is the Point Walter Sandbar. When the tide is low, visitors can walk right out into the river along this natural strip, making it a favourite spot for photography and a unique way to experience the river from a different perspective.
