The Poona Boat Ramp, situated on Owen Cox Street in Poona, next to a foreshore park and Poona Beach, features a single-lane concrete ramp that provides access to the Great Sandy Strait. It’s a solid spot for boating, but it’s important to plan your trip carefully as launching is only possible on the upper half of the tide. At low tide, the ramp can be muddy for some distance, and if the wind is coming off the water, it can feel chilly. Be aware that mosquitoes and midges are also common in the area.
Parking is easy, with a wide, shady area for cars and trailers, and the ramp includes rubbish bins and a small fish cleaning table. The adjacent foreshore park is a great place to relax, featuring an undercover picnic shelter, barbecue facilities, public toilets, and picnic tables, all with fantastic views of the beach and water.
Exciting upgrades are on the way. Maritime Safety Queensland, in collaboration with the Queensland Government’s Department of Environment, Science and Innovation (Marine Parks), has approved improvements to the Poona Boat Ramp as part of broader enhancements to boating infrastructure in the Great Sandy Marine Park.
The upgrade plan will expand the current single-lane ramp to two lanes and add a support lane with a new floating walkway on the northern side to protect users from north-easterly waves. Dredging will improve the ramp approaches, aiming to provide near all-tide access.
Works are scheduled to begin in September and are expected to take around four months, weather permitting, with reopening anticipated by the Christmas holidays. The full project is expected to be completed by January 2026, ensuring a safer and more convenient launch experience for local boaters.
