Tucked away in the rural surrounds of Koumala, the Rocky Dam Creek Boat Ramp offers a simple, no-frills access point to the muddy waters of Rocky Dam Creek. The site features a single-lane concrete ramp that provides direct launch access, though the tides can heavily influence conditions. After large tidal movements, residual mud is common, and low tide can make launching challenging, so a 4WD is generally recommended.
On-site, there’s a large, compacted dirt area used for parking boat trailers and vehicles, and it also serves as a basic free camping area for those looking to stay overnight. It’s a popular stop for fishers and campers alike, especially given the easy access to the creek and surrounding waterways.
That said, facilities are very limited (there are no toilets or showers), so visitors need to be fully self-sufficient and bring their own supplies, including water for cleaning off mud. Insect repellent is also strongly advised, as midges and sandflies can be particularly heavy in the area.
While it’s appreciated as a peaceful, budget-friendly camping and fishing spot, conditions can be rough around the edges. Some visitors note the presence of rubbish at times, so taking all waste with you is important to help keep the area usable for everyone.
Despite the simplicity, it remains a scenic and functional location for those who don’t mind a bit of mud, enjoy quiet fishing, or are keen on birdwatching. Just be mindful of local wildlife, including the occasional shark in the creek system, and come prepared for a very natural, rustic outdoor experience.
