The Rocky Point Boat
Ramp in Weipa is a simple yet convenient single-lane concrete ramp that
provides easy access to the mouth of the Mission River and out into the open
ocean. Perfect for small boats, the ramp is designed for trailer and
tow-vehicle launches, with a sloping paved surface that extends below low tide,
making it usable in all tide conditions.
Beside the ramp,
there’s a small rock formation where anglers often try their luck catching bait
fish; plenty of them can be found in the area. The spot is also well-known for
its stunning sunsets, drawing in visitors who want to take in the breathtaking
views. However, it’s important to stay aware of your surroundings. Crocodiles
frequent the area, so swimming is definitely not recommended.
There have been
discussions about a $12 million upgrade to the ramp, with the State Government
seeking more community feedback on the project. While an initial concept plan
was presented at a Weipa Bowls Club information session, there haven't been any
major updates as of now.
All in all, Rocky
Point offers a peaceful spot for launching boats and fishing along the banks.
Whether you're heading out onto the water or just enjoying the scenic views,
it’s a great place to spend some time; just be sure to keep an eye out for the
local wildlife!
