Sandon River Campground is a relaxed coastal retreat that offers spacious caravan and camping sites, along with fantastic opportunities for fishing and canoeing. Located at the mouth of the Sandon River in the Clarence Valley Region, the campground boasts a unique setting with the river on one side and the ocean on the other. This location is ideal for swimming, boating, or simply enjoying the beautiful natural surroundings along the scenic Clarence Coast.
For those keen to head into the river or offshore, there’s a sealed concrete ramp that serves as a beach launching area available, though access is limited to 4WD vehicles. The accessibility of the ramp is dependent on the tidal conditions, which means it can be shallow at times. Make sure to know the tide conditions before visiting the area. The campground features around 40 sites suitable for tents, camper trailers, caravans, or camping beside your vehicle. Facilities include toilets, an amenities block, barbecue areas, picnic tables, and a public phone. Visitors should note that water is not available on-site, and beach access also requires a 4WD.
Park entry fees apply and are separate from camping fees.
What keeps visitors coming back is the relaxed, unspoiled atmosphere. It’s widely appreciated for its variety of fishing options (whether from the river, beach, rocks, or out at sea) along with abundant birdlife and native wildlife. Many campers describe it as peaceful and ideal for families, with plenty to enjoy, such as beach walks, 4WD adventures, and evenings around the fire pits. The toilets are generally well-maintained, though amenities are basic, with no showers available, so it’s best to come prepared with extra water.
While the campground offers a quiet, back-to-basics experience with stunning coastal views and marine life, it’s worth noting that road access can be rough after rain, and certain areas are managed by a fishing club, which can occasionally affect the atmosphere.
Nearby, essential supplies, fuel, and a few local spots like a café and bowling club can be found about 10–15 kilometres away in Brooms Head.
Overall, Sandon River Campground delivers a simple but rewarding coastal camping experience, ideal for those looking to unwind, fish, and enjoy nature at its best.
