The Sportsman Creek Boat Ramp, located at Lower Southgate along Lawrence Road and Riverbank Road beneath the bridge, features a single-lane concrete ramp that leads directly into Sportsman Creek and out toward the mouth of the Clarence River.
Recently upgraded, it now offers improved and easy access for boaters, along with a long pontoon that makes launching and retrieving more convenient, even in changing conditions. Its sheltered position is a real advantage, keeping the ramp well protected from the winds that often funnel up the Clarence, which makes retrieval noticeably easier.
The surrounding area is fairly open and flat, with grassy spaces used for parking, as there are no sealed bays available. While amenities are minimal, there is a well-maintained fish cleaning table on site that gets plenty of use. It’s also known among anglers as a productive spot, with catfish commonly caught in the area.
At times, houseboats can be seen mooring along the pontoon, adding to the laid-back river atmosphere. The creek is also popular for canoeing, with paddlers often exploring towards Woody Creek and the Everlasting Wetlands National Park. This stretch of water is known for its rich birdlife, offering a rare chance to quietly observe species such as black-necked storks and brolgas in their natural habitat. On the freshwater side of the weir, there is also a healthy bass fishery.
With its calm, tree-lined waterways and abundant wildlife, the area is often described as a “Kakadu of the south,” offering a peaceful way to experience the natural beauty of the region.
