The Tomahawk Boat Ramp, located in the small coastal town of Tomahawk, is a single-lane concrete ramp that provides direct access to the open ocean and nearby Tomahawk Island. While it serves as the main launch point for the area, it's worth noting that conditions here can be challenging. The ramp is exposed to northeasterly winds, and launching is restricted at low tide when the base of the ramp often sits above the waterline. Sand movement in the area can also cause a drop-off at the end of the ramp, which may complicate launching and retrieval. Cross swells are common, making use of the ramp more difficult, especially for less experienced boaters.
The ramp area can also become congested, particularly during peak times, as visitors sometimes block access with parked vehicles. Parking is limited and can fill up quickly. That said, for those fishing from the ramp during high tide, it’s possible to land a few Australian salmon or mullet.
Despite the ramp's limitations, Tomahawk is a pleasant destination, especially for families. The beach is scenic and inviting, with clear aquamarine waters and a relaxed atmosphere; perfect for a picnic or an afternoon by the sea. Public toilets are available near the adjacent caravan park.
For longer stays, the local caravan park offers a mix of powered sites near the entrance and basic amenities. While the park is a work in progress under new management, visitors will find clean facilities, including hot showers ($1 for 6 minutes), and a small shop with takeaway food, coffee, and everyday essentials. Some noise from dirt bikes and quad bikes can be expected, and there is no camp kitchen. The park also has several permanent sites, giving it a rustic, lived-in feel.
Even for those just passing through, the caravan park's café and general store are convenient places to stop before heading out to explore the surrounding coastline.
