The Western Boat Ramp is one of two access points to Hinze Dam, located in Advancetown, a rural locality on the Gold Coast. The single lane concrete ramp only caters to electric-powered watercraft, sail craft, and paddle craft, making it a peaceful spot for kayaking or a quiet day on the water.
Fishing is permitted both from the shore and from your vessel, though a permit is required. It’s worth noting that fish caught here should be released rather than eaten, due to naturally occurring mercury in the water.
The ramp area includes ample parking for cars and boat trailers, as well as toilet facilities. Surrounding the launch area, visitors will find four picnic and barbecue zones, nearby playgrounds for families, and a modern interpretive centre that overlooks the parklands and the lake; a great spot to learn more about the area.
Hinze Dam is known for its calm, scenic environment. The mountain backdrop, mirrored reflections on the water, and native wildlife make it an excellent destination for nature photography, birdwatching, or simply enjoying a peaceful walk along the shoreline or spit. Kayakers will enjoy the calm waters, though care is needed near the submerged trees, as some are home to bugs and wasps.
For anglers, the dam is stocked and known to produce good-sized Australian bass, but again, catch and release is advised. With scenic views, quiet corners, rock pools, and swimming holes nearby, it’s a spot that suits both solo visitors and families.
Whether you're here for a paddle, a picnic, or just to take in the sunrise or sunset, the Western Boat Ramp at Hinze Dam offers a quiet, beautiful setting surrounded by nature.
