If you’ve just bought a Stabicraft boat,
you’re about to enjoy the freedom that comes with being out on the water, far
from everyday stress. However, you may have noticed that all their models,
except for the Frontier and Explorer range, come with a windshield designed to
protect both your equipment and the people on board. When you’re cruising on a
powerful boat, a good windshield helps shield you from flying debris, wind, and
water spray, making every trip more comfortable.
But just like car windshields, any surface exposed to the
elements, your boat’s windshield can quickly collect grime, salt, and dirt, especially
if it’s not cleaned regularly. Routine cleaning helps prevent scratches, haze,
and long-term damage, keeping your visibility clear and the material in good
condition. Below are a few practical tips to help you look after your boat’s
windshield properly.
Avoid Rubbing the Glass When Cleaning
Most boat windshields
are made from acrylic (or plexiglass), a durable material that resists breaking
but scratches easily. To prevent damage, avoid wiping the surface before
rinsing it. Start by spraying the windshield with fresh water to wash away loose
dirt and salt. If you encounter stubborn grime, apply a little dish detergent,
let it soak for a moment, and gently remove it with a soft sponge.
Select The Right Cleaning Supplies
Once the surface is free of dirt, you can polish it to
restore clarity. Steer clear of products containing ammonia since this can
cause micro-cracks in acrylic and weaken the windshield over time. Skip
furniture polish too as it can build up and leave a cloudy film. Instead, use
cleaning and polishing products made specifically for marine acrylic. These are
formulated to resist scratching, UV damage, and salt exposure. You can buy the
polish in marine
shops or online stores. Pair them with a non-abrasive cloth such as
microfibre or soft cotton flannel for best results.
Consider The Cover You Use
To protect your boat’s interior when you’re not using it,
you place a cover on top of it. If you want your windshield to look immaculate
and lengthen its lifespan, consider the boat cover you’ll be using. Heavy
canvas can rub against the surface and create scratches, while vinyl covers can
trap heat underneath, something acrylic doesn’t handle well. To avoid abrasion
and heat damage, choose a cover with a soft inner lining and breathable
materials.
Keep Heat Away from the Windshield
Acrylic windshields are sensitive to heat, which can cause
stress cracks over time. Avoid using hot water when washing, and don’t use a
hair dryer or heat gun to speed up drying. The sun already exposes the material
to enough heat on its own.
By giving your windshield the right care by
doing all the things mentioned above, you’ll keep it clear, durable, and
looking great for years of boating ahead.
