Lady Bay Ramp in Warrnambool, VIC

The Lady Bay Boat Ramp, located beside the Breakwater Rock Pier in Warrnambool, has recently undergone a significant upgrade funded by the Victorian Government. As one of south-west Victoria’s key offshore launching points, the ramp plays an important role for both locals and visitors towing trailer boats to fish, dive, or simply spend time on the water with family and friends.

The upgrade focused on improving safety and functionality. The original two-lane concrete ramp, which had deteriorated over time, has been replaced with new grooved concrete slabs designed to provide better grip and safer launching and retrieval. Remedial work was also carried out at the top of the ramp to smooth the transition between the ramp and its approach, improving overall usability.

In addition, the older timber jetties on both the northern and southern sides have been replaced with modern, more practical structures. These new jetties offer improved tie-up points and better protection within the harbour. Rock revetments surrounding the ramp were also strengthened as part of the works.

These improvements form part of Warrnambool City Council’s broader Safer Launching and Breakwater Stabilisation project, which included detailed design studies to enhance the boat ramp and surrounding port infrastructure, including the breakwater itself. Complementing these upgrades, extensive dredging of the bay was completed in 2023 to improve boating access across a wider range of tides.

Lady Bay remains a scenic and popular destination. It can be busy with visitors, particularly during peak periods, but that’s part of its appeal. As with most concrete ramps, conditions can become slippery when wet, so caution is advised when launching or retrieving. There is a large carpark for both cars and trailers across the ramp.

The Breakwater stretches out as a solid barrier against the force of the open ocean, shielding the shoreline from the full impact of the waves. It’s an impressive structure, both in scale and presence, and stands out as a striking feature along the coast. On one side, waves crash and roll in; on the other, the pier and anglers are protected by calmer, more sheltered waters, creating a noticeable and rather scenic contrast.

It’s an appealing place to visit, whether for a relaxed walk along the wall or a quiet picnic by the water. The setting makes it easy to spend a few unhurried hours simply watching the ocean and enjoying the sea air.

Nearby, there are restaurants and takeaway outlets, along with seating areas and generous free parking, making it a convenient spot for families and visitors. Fishing is also popular here, with many people casting a line along the breakwater in the hope of a good catch. There is also a fish cleaning table for anglers to clean their catch.

Overall, the recent upgrades have strengthened Lady Bay’s position as a key boating hub in the region, offering improved safety and better access for the boating community.
