Catfish are a diverse fish species that can be found in
almost any freshwater body around the globe, and in Australia, their numbers
are thriving. These freshwater monsters are no picky eaters — from plants to
small fishes, they eat almost anything edible they can find in their way.
Because of their glutinous tendencies, they are a popular
species that all anglers love to catch; they are easy to catch and they can be
cooked into a delicious meal.
The secret to successfully catching a catfish is the bait
that you will use. It’s no secret that baits are one of the most useful that
every angler should have when they are catching any type of fish.
Catfish are predators and they love to pursue wriggling live
baits; aside from that, they have a very good sense of smell and they will
pounce on any baits that have pungent scents.
However, there are different types of catfish and not all of
them are the same, some catfish may prefer a particular type of bait and some
just accept whatever bait is being presented to them. However, several baits are
proven to lure a fish into your fishing rod without fail. Here is a list of the
best catfish baits that you can use in your next catfishing adventures on your Quintrex
Renegade:
Worms
Worms are go-to baits for catfish since they love to eat
worms and they are the cheapest. Plus, they’re easy to acquire them. You can
find them by digging through your garden (especially after it rains) or if you
don’t like to do the labour, you can buy them in garden supply stores or bait
shops, with a worm guy who can find worms for you for just a service fee.
If you’re using worms as your live bait, make sure to keep
them in a cool and damp place. You don’t want your worms already motionless way
before you catch some catfish.
Minnow
Minnows are also great baits for catfish. They are also easy
to catch, you can find them swimming along in freshwater habitats such as
ponds, lakes, rivers, creeks, swamps, and bogs.
Minnows are another excellent bait choice for catfish. Like
worms, minnows are easy for catfish to eat and they’re also readily available.
Their fish in distress movement when they are thrown in the water triggers the
predatory instinct of the catfish and pounces on them fast before you could
even say “Catfish is delicious”. Just like worms, make sure to keep them in a
cool, damp place.
Liver
Chicken livers are another popular bait choice for catfish.
They are so easy to get and catfish love the bloody taste of liver. You can buy
them in your local groceries or butcher shops. Make sure to store the fresh
livers in your freezers to preserve them until you’re ready to use them.
Large Pellets
Large pellets are an excellent choice to use as bait if
you’re aiming to catch larger catfish. Catfish also love to ingest them since
they are easy to eat. Plus, they have lots of nutrients that keep them paunchy
and healthy. Pellets are easy to find too, you can buy them at tackle stores
or marine
shops. Make sure to get the flavoured ones.
Bread
Believe it or not, bread can also be used as bait for
catfishes. They also love to eat bread because of its taste and texture and
what’s even better is that it can be moulded into different shapes. The next
time you go catfishing and accidentally forget to bring bait with you,
sacrifice one of your lunch foods and use the bread to mould it into small
balls or pieces. Dangle the bread on the surface (to avoid it getting too
soaked that it loses its composition). This is a good lure to tempt the catfish
to go near the water’s surface.
Shrimp
Shrimp may be seafood but catfish can’t get enough of them.
Shrimp can be bought at grocery stores or fish markets. If you’re using a live
shrimp, make sure to keep them in a cool and damp place.
