Choosing the proper fishing rod is one of the most important, yet often overlooked by a lot of anglers, both beginners and experienced. Using the appropriate fishing rod when you’re angling is one of the most important factors in having success out on the water. It has a huge impact on whether or not you are getting bites. Use the wrong rod and you might not be able to cast as far or accurately as possible. Use the right rod and you can land a cast on a fish and work your bait well, which will also produce you more bites, catches, and fun.
As you might probably know, there are different types of fishing rods for sale in the market. Even though the main function of a fishing rod is to support the fishing line and hook to catch fish, the different types offer different techniques that are suited to various fishing styles and the mastery level of the person using the rod. But with so many types of fishing to catch various fish species, you need a rod that can accommodate those activities. Some of the common fishing rods that are widely available are:
Spinning rods
Spinning rods are the most common type of rod used by anglers of all skill levels. A spinning reel is fitted underneath the rod making it a very versatile rod and reel combo suitable for lure casting and bait fishing. Depending on the weight class of your setup, a spinning rod can be used to target a wide range of small to medium-sized fish species from the shore, and they are well suited to small boats such as the Stabicraft Explorer boat or kayak or dinghy.
Baitcasting rods
Baitcasting rods are a great alternative to spinning rods since they are versatile, but they are recommended to use by more experienced anglers. Amateurs can very quickly be turned off by a baitcasting rod and reel combo since they are prone to tangling on the spool. But for an experienced angler, they offer even greater accuracy when casting and more control when handling a fish.
Surf rods
Surf rods are designed specifically to suit surf fishing and fishing off rocks. The longest of the rod family, surf rods can be up to 4-5 metres long and are used from the shore to cast extremely long distances past the breaking waves to where the fish like to feed. Surf rods are usually used with big eggbeater reels to tackle big fish and cope with the added weight when pulling your catch in through the waves. To transport them easily, surf rods can be broken down into multiple pieces.
Overhead rods
Overhead rods are the classic boat fishing rod. They are engineered to work in perfect unison with an overhead reel and are usually slightly shorter and more powerful than casting rods. They’re made for fighting big species of deep-sea fish and sportfish. So, when you’re out in the ocean in your Seacruiser boat looking for game fish, just drop your line and wait for the bites to come.
Fly rods
Fly rods are specifically designed for use with a fly reel when fly fishing. Fly fishing is very different to other traditional forms of fishing. It’s often compared to hunting, where stealth, patience and a whole bunch of skills are needed to cast a fly to mimic what the species is feeding on.
Kids rods
There are a lot of kids being trained how to fish but the usual fishing rods in the market are more suited for adults to use. Kids need fishing rods that they can use comfortably for them to effectively catch fish. If the rod is too big for your kids to handle, they’ll become frustrated and may lose interest. An all-rounder rod, or rod and reel combo, (such as a light, spinning rod and reel combo) is usually a good choice for kids.
