Update as of 13 July 2026:
Victoria's boating community can look forward
to improved access to the water, with major upgrades progressing at several
boat ramps across the state.
At Schnapper Point Boat Ramp in
Mornington, construction is well underway as crews remove the existing concrete
ramp and prepare the site for a new and improved launching facility. Excavation
works are continuing alongside the installation of new foundations that will
support upgraded pontoons and a more durable boat ramp.
Once complete, the redevelopment will provide
smoother launching and retrieval, improved durability during busy boating
periods, and a better overall experience for recreational boaters. The project
is expected to be completed in time for the popular snapper season later this
year.
Aside from Schnapper Point, construction is
also underway at Howqua
Inlet and Tooradin,
while works are set to begin soon at Port
Welshpool, Werribee
South, Limeburners
Point, and Tarago Reservoir.
The development of Howqua Inlet and Tarago
Reservoir will include the construction of a boat ramp, providing valuable
access for recreational boating and fishing activities. This project will
enhance opportunities for water-based recreation in the area.
Looking ahead, additional boat ramp upgrades
are being planned across numerous locations, including Altona,
Cannons
Creek, Capel
Sound, Dromana,
Lake
Eppalock, Lake
Glenmaggie, Newhaven,
Port
Fairy, Stony
Point, Warneet,
and several other boating destinations throughout Victoria.
These projects form part of ongoing efforts to
improve boating infrastructure, making it easier and safer for recreational
boaters to access Victorian waterways for years to come.
The Schnapper Point Boat Ramp is a well-used facility in Mornington Peninsula, providing access to Port Phillip Bay. The ramp is located beside Mother's Beach and the Mornington Yacht Club, and a few metres away from Mornington Pier.
This two-lane ramp is made of concrete and is in good condition, making it suitable for a variety of recreational vessels. The ramp features a fixed jetty, which is ideal for enjoying views and land-based fishing, as well as bollards for securing boats during retrieval.
Boaters can enjoy launching into one of Victoria’s most popular boating and fishing locations, with ample opportunities for catching snapper, whiting, and flathead.
Parking spaces, including for cars and boat trailers, are ample though it can become congested during peak fishing seasons.
The ramp has nearby amenities such as two toilets (one in Mother's Beach and one in Mornington Pier), showers, a kids' playground, picnic areas and BBQ station in the Mother's Beach, a restaurant, and a café for visitors looking to relax before or after their trip.
The surrounding facilities, such as the fishing charter docked near the ramp and a nearby restaurant, offer convenience for both locals and visitors.
The Mornington Schnapper Point Boat Ramp is located just a few metres from Schnapper Point and the Mathew Flinders Memorial. It serves as an accessible and scenic launching point, offering breathtaking views of the bay and the Mornington Peninsula coastline.
